September 22, 2024: The United Nations General Assembly adopts ‘A pact for the Future’ described by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a landmark agreement that is a ‘step-change towards more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism.’
Guterres had long-pushed for the summit and the pact, which covers themes including peace and security, global governance, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender, youth and future generations. It lays out some 56 broad actions that countries pledged to achieve.
It states: ‘We recognize that the multilateral system and its institutions, with the United Nations and its Charter at the centre, must be strengthened to keep pace with a changing world. They must be fit for the present and the future – effective and capable, prepared for the future, just, democratic, equitable and representative of today’s world, inclusive, interconnected and financially stable.’
‘Today, we pledge a new beginning in multilateralism*. The actions in this Pact aim to ensure that the United Nations and other key multilateral institutions can deliver a better future for people and planet, enabling us to fulfil our existing commitments while rising to new and emerging challenges and opportunities.’
Russia failed in its bid to include an amendment – backed by North Korea, Syria, Nicaragua, Belarus and Iran – that would have spelled out that ‘the United Nations and its system shall not intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state.’
*Multilateralism refers to an alliance of multiple countries pursuing a common goal. It’s based on the principles of inclusivity, equality, and cooperation, and aims to foster a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world.

The UN today
A host of global crises – ongoing wars (Mars) in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Myanmar; lagging climate change mitigation efforts (Saturn); widespread national debt issues (Saturn-house 8); and concerns over technology (Uranus) advancing without governance (Sun) – have spotlighted the need for UN reform and overhauling international financial systems (Jupiter).
Power struggles (Sun) within the UN are creating a security crisis (Saturn). In 2024 the all-powerful Security Council is unable to do what it was designed to do. Pluto’s veto power is the big problem. Russia is the veto champion.
In the age of squabbling (Aquarius) and extremely high geopolitical tensions there are huge rows (Mars). The atmosphere is toxic. The Security Council is the only body in the world that can legally authorize the use of force and its policing of conflict isn’t working. It fails to deal with humanitarian crises, crimes against humanity (Pluto) and mass atrocities (Mars-Pluto). There’s growing mistrust between nations as climate-fueled disasters mount. Rogue nations engage in wholesale slaughter and destruction.
The world keeps changing and the 80-year-old United Nations has to change and reform along with it. And at a time of great global turmoil 193 nations – driven primarily by self-interest – have to cooperate and follow the international rules-based order. World leaders (Sun) aka the power crowd are responsible for making the world a better place to live.
