According to Hermetic tradition your soul was differentiated aka created and recognized as a distinct entity for the purpose of being educated to become a worker in God’s great evolutionary plan; and when it came into existence it had no consciousness.
Consciousness – the awareness of your surroundings, sense of self, and the ability to think and reason – is dependent upon experience and with no experience it had no consciousness, intelligence or ability.
Consciousness is a perception of relations and in order to acquire such awareness, relative conditions must be contacted.
You can only perceive light by having experience with its varying degrees of intensity; and if you have some experience with darkness, the more readily you appreciate the light.
It takes the sour of a lemon, to bring out in proper contrast the sweetness of honey; and know-how depends upon experience in using knowledge.
Therefore, if your soul was to develop power and acquire knowledge, and not remain semiconscious, it would have to have experiences of wide contrast and great variety.
Contrast means strong impressions and strong desires; variety means discrimination and fine shades of feeling; and to develop its powers and knowledge there is nothing more effective than its association with the various forms of the outer-plane world and the inner-plane world.
So, your soul motivated by an impulse to live, struggle on and survive and a potential to develop states of consciousness accepts the invitation to climb the ladder of life and commenced its grand evolutionary journey to acquire and develop consciousness – feelings, thoughts, intelligence and ability – through experience.
At the start, being totally unskilled, it needed elementary lessons in living and the fossil records during 3,500 million years reveal that the first living things were single-cell microscopic bacteria and protozoa.
So, to learn how to handle the chemicals of higher forms of physical life – secretion and assimilation depending upon such selectivity – your soul’s first experiences were in the mineral kingdom. That’s when it developed the ability to manage the chemical processes of the physical cell.
Then to gain sensitivity it had to have experiences in the vegetable kingdom. And scientific experiments prove that plants do react to stimuli in a similar manner, but in less degree, than do animals possessing a nervous system.
Then to develop simple consciousness your soul had to have experience in the animal kingdom below the human. And to acquire and possess self-consciousness it had to be born into human form.
Through psychokinesis your soul attached itself to one life-form after another, seeking more and more ample expression through developing, as the result of experience, the ability to manifest through successively more complex forms of life.
So, when you were born a human soul, your soul’s consciousness had been formatted by previous experience.
Your soul’s grand evolutionary journey provided it with the opportunity to develop and continually upgrade its know-how and ability, till eventually it acquired enough know-how to build and animate your physical body and manage its biological processes.
Human life provides your soul with the opportunity to experience self-consciousness. It has finally acquired the biological and other skills needed to operate and manage the electrochemical processes that make self-consciousness possible and now your soul is objectively aware of itself and its existence.
Your evolutionary past is a series of incarnations in physical life forms that have prepared your soul for human life.
The beauty and elegance of life on Earth becomes sublime when you can see the evolutionary process in practice.
Souls are provided with experiences that gradually increase in their complexity and this evolutionary process, called life, guarantees the continual upgrading and development of their intelligence.
