According to sources on the Aquarian Age internet new age spiritualism is a diverse and eclectic movement that emerged in the late 20th century although its roots can be traced back to 1848 shortly after the discovery of Neptune in September 1846 during the Age of Pisces.
That’s when Katherine and Margaret Fox claimed to have communicated with the spirit of a dead man murdered in their house. The spirit supposedly made contact via a code of rapping sounds, but they later confessed to making the sounds by tapping on the floor themselves.
The Neptune period of the Age of Pisces was the age of mediums, seers and spiritualists. It was when lodges practiced secret initiation ceremonies and Brotherhoods kept their teachings hidden. When seers employed clairvoyance to see things the human eye couldn’t and when mediums like Helena Blavatsky channeled information from discarnate entities. But no one could tell the difference between the ravings of a discarnate lunatic and the wisdom of an inner-plane spiritual master.
Theosophist Alice Bailey talked about a coming ‘New Age’.
Time marched on and in the 1970s old age spiritualism which was associated with communication with the dead through mediums evolved into new age spiritualism which emphasized personal freedom, spiritual exploration and a connection to nature.
It encompassed a wide range of beliefs and practices – meditation and mindfulness, crystal healing and holistic health – drawing from various traditions, including Eastern mysticism, Western esotericism and traditional astrology.
New age spirituality
Spirituality is a vague term and very difficult to precisely define.
The Aquarian Age internet has a go: Spirituality is the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.
Traditionally it was associated with communication with the dead through mediums which, in religious philosophy, teaches the existence of a being or reality distinct from matter.
So, traditional spiritualists are people who believe that there are spirits of the dead with whom mediums can communicate. Some spiritualists organize into churches while others form spiritual groups; and while some seek advice from the dead others practice spiritual healing.
But modern new age spiritualists see spirituality referring to their deepest values and meanings. Spirituality is a vision they have of their human spirit that will assist them to achieve their full potential.
New age spirituality encourages people to explore their spirituality and seek personal growth.
It’s a very subjective, self-centered belief and practice that’s focused on individual self-realization and spiritual fulfilment – the attainment of a higher consciousness and personal transformation – through a lifestyle that promotes, fitness, healthy living, and holistic wellbeing.
Spirituality has always been associated with religion but new age spirituality isn’t. It’s detached from religious traditions and lacks a central authority, structured leadership or universally accepted texts.
A history of modern spiritualism will tell you that Emanuel Swedenborg is a key influencer. Born in 1688 his mystical writings on the afterlife and spiritual experiences – like dreams and visions – resonate with many people today who are seeking a deeper understanding of life and their existence.
So, in the very smart and knowledgeable Aquarian age the self-centered mystical beliefs and practices of Pisces satisfy the new age spiritual needs of millions of people.
Neptune’s pseudo spirituality
But Neptune’s self-centered, mystical spiritualty that’s focused on fitness, health, wellbeing and personal growth is pseudo spirituality.
In the Pluto period of Aquarius mystical folly is widespread.
The environment is saturated with absurd mystical literature so it’s easy for those with a prominent birth chart Neptune, who are very inclined towards mysticism, to come in contact with what is promoted as new age spirituality.
They live in an environment where spiritual beliefs and practices which may or may not be true are promoted and in Pluto’s age of disinformation the true meaning of spirituality has been inverted to mean what it doesn’t.
Unaware they practice Neptune’s mystical pseudo spirituality in the belief that they’re developing spiritually.
They blindly believe that by practicing new age fitness, healthy living, and holistic wellbeing they’re growing spiritually when they’re not.
The mystical Neptune feelings emerging from their souls are not a measure of their spirituality.
In 2026 new age spirituality is a smorgasbord of disinformation cunningly disseminated by Lower-Pluto to deliberately impede an individual’s true spiritual potential.
Spirituality is not based upon fitness, healthy living and holistic wellbeing. It’s based upon an enrichment of the mental and emotional life in general and in particular upon those mental and emotional experiences derived from the effort to benefit others.
Your spiritual development is best measured by your ability to benefit others.
Spirituality is a very special feeling that prompts noble actions and deeds and its vibratory rate is way above self-interest and physical fitness.
Hermetic astrology teaches that it’s impossible to acquire spirituality and build a spiritual body through selfish living. Instead, it comes only as a result of pronounced effort to contribute to the common good and assist others.
When you’re spiritual you’re not in it for yourself.
When you transcend self-interest and physical things you’ve commenced the spiritualizing of your intelligence and ability.
Neptune’s new age mystical, self-centered spiritualism is a big challenge for Aquarius. It’s a pseudo spirituality that hinders the development of true spirituality. People who practice it are being tricked into thinking they’re developing spiritually when they’re not.
