True spirituality

True spirituality won’t be found among the arrogant or self-righteous. Instead, it manifests in kindness and helpfulness.

True spirituality won’t be found among the boastful or those who in the attempt to compensate for their perceived shortcomings abuse or belittle others.

It expresses in constructive activities, which instead of exalting self-importance, benefit some portion of the human race.

True spirituality does not devote itself to destroying those with whom it disagrees. Instead, it works constructively and incessantly for real human progress. And real human progress depends, not merely upon a few nebulous religious ideas, and not upon those who use a loud speaker to proclaim their own spirituality, but upon those who have the initiative to back up their ideals with concrete actions.

Those who are truly spiritual do not feel they should live in luxury while much of humanity lives in abject poverty.

The truly spiritual don’t feel it is their divine right to enjoy educational opportunities denied to most.

The truly spiritual do not let others bear the brunt of the difficulties that inevitably come to those who oppose special privilege. Instead, they shoulder their share of the burden of building a better, kinder, and more tolerant world.

True spirituality does not withdraw from interest in politics: for politics largely determines not merely the conditions under which people must live, but their opportunities to gain those facts which make soul progression possible.

True spirituality does not cease with discussing ideals. It works constructively to realize the ideals. And these ideals are not confined to some other plane or to the distant future in the physical world. They embrace the practical things of life right here and now.

True spirituality does not refrain from taking an interest in economic matters: for the economic conditions under which people live may compel so much of their energies to be absorbed in providing for their own bodies and welfare that none is left for intellectual advancement or the culture of their souls.

True spirituality does not ignore physical health: for it realizes that disease may hamper intellectual progress and hinder effort at soul development.

And even though it means certain persecution by interests of great wealth and power, true spirituality does not hesitate to take vigorous action to thwart the efforts of all those who seek to suppress knowledge including knowledge of inner-plane forces and that life continues amid surroundings on the inner-plane that are not dissimilar to those encountered on Earth.

True spirituality is not interested in self-aggrandizement, but in the progress of humanity; and progress depends upon the political, economic, public welfare and educational opportunities not merely of a few, but of all the people of the world.

People must be given facts, and they must have the environmental conditions that will enable them to use these facts.

They must have enough education to understand the various significant facts of life including the facts of astrology, extrasensory perception, induced emotion, directed thinking and how to spot propaganda and not be misled by it.

Those who work to give people these facts, and those who minister to their health or who work in other practical ways to benefit humanity, are demonstrating their spirituality by the practical results they get. Their lives are in stark contrast to those who boast of their own holiness or self-importance.

We all need to be more spiritual than we are. And as we actually grow in spirituality, that growth will be demonstrated by the increasing effort we make to benefit humanity.

Ability doesn’t always manifest goodness

It is very common for people to confuse ability with goodness. Yet, if you look about you, especially noting those who play a dominant part in world affairs you must be convinced that many individuals of outstanding ability are using that ability to selfish advantage and to destroy true spiritual values. It is obvious that whatever abilities an individual possesses can be used for either good or evil purposes: for either spiritual or unspiritual ends.

The ability to use any psychic faculty is no exception to this rule.

Psychic ability consists of exercising intelligence, the senses, or exerting power, upon the inner-plane. It is no more, and no less spiritual to exercise psychic ability then it is to exercise objective intelligence, objective perception, and physical energies on the external plane.

To use a knife is neither spiritual nor unspiritual. To use it to injure another is unspiritual. To use it to carve a pleasing gift for a friend is spiritual.

Through extrasensory perception it is possible to acquire information not accessible through ordinary channels. If such information is used to gain a selfish advantage over another, the use for which the information is employed makes the act unspiritual. But if the information is used to benefit others and brings joy into their lives, the act of employing it becomes spiritual.

You should develop and use your intelligence and other abilities to contribute more to universal welfare.

If your purpose in developing whatever faculties you have is to be able to benefit others more, as well as advance your own interests, the effort you put forth is spiritual in nature. But if your purpose is solely to benefit yourself, perhaps at the expense of others, your effort is not spiritual.

A person who uses their psychic ability to help humanity is no more spiritual than a person who, unaware of psychic things, uses their intelligence and physical powers to benefit others. But the person who has active extrasensory perception has a certain satisfaction not common to others.

Through the exalted feelings which accompany their kind efforts and helpful acts they come in contact with levels of the inner-world which are similar to their own spiritual vibratory rate.

They come to a full realization of the nature of life and effort in these higher realms where, although they are currently functioning in a physical body, their consciousness already dwells.

The development of any psychic faculty should be for the same purpose that you’re developing intelligence and acquiring knowledge. And that is for understanding life and its problems better, coping with situations better and being more helpful to others.
