Your birth chart is a map of your character. It reveals how you got to be you through evolutionary experience and gives your life as a human soul a trajectory. Your character has faults and defects. You engage in misguided behavior that causes mishap and misfortune and by applying alchemy you can harmonize and transmute your destructive character traits.
The purpose of mental and spiritual alchemy is to present the facts of the character transmutation process; and their function is to assist you to work with birth chart data to transmute your character and play a proactive role in the building of an imperishable spiritual body.
The alchemic process in building your character involves changing discordant and destructive thoughts, feelings, and actions into those that are proper, effective and definitely constructive.
You need to know that it’s not possible to think and act destructively without it reacting upon your life in some discordant manner; and it is not possible to think and act constructively without attracting conditions that are harmonious and helpful.
Success and failure, health and disease, wealth or poverty, are not the result of chance. They represent definite organizations of mental energy within your astral body. They’re the result of experience and each new experience adds something constructive or destructive to your thought-cell organization.
The most potent experiences to cause quick changes in your astral form and life are your thoughts and emotions. It’s your mental attitude toward your various experiences that determines if the thought-elements in your finer-astral-form are combining with other thought elements into harmonious or discordant compounds.
Every incident in your life, by the thoughts, feelings and emotions associated with it, adds new energy to certain complexes or organizations of cells of consciousness within your astral constitution.
These complexes than attract you to events and conditions corresponding to their quality. Poverty and failure, for instance, are due to a discordant thought-cell complex expressing its specific type of discord.
Your astral body is the mold for your physical form.
Your physical body and the events it attracts is a replica, insofar as physical materials and environment permit, of your astral body’s thought cell activity.
Through the law of affinity the thought-cell structure and activity of your astral body attracts corresponding physical conditions and events into your life.
Your character, at any given time, is the expression of your various urges or mental factors as they are organized in your astral body; and when you change your thoughts, feelings and character you alter your fortune accordingly.
Evolutionary experience
In response to evolutionary experience you developed traits of character relating to your survival. Your first impulse or thought was for safety. It’s mapped in your birth chart by Saturn. Self-preservation is nature’s first law, but survival not only depends upon the desire for safety, but also, upon the ability to dare, and fight, and struggle, and to resist outside influences.
In order to survive you required food. You had to avoid harmful conditions and destruction. You had to reproduce. So, to meet the requirements of survival, it became necessary in the course of your evolution, to evolve a set of mental factors which possessed not only the ability to avoid antagonistic entities, but to meet and defeat them. These thought-elements which provide the means of protection through aggression, are mapped in your birth chart by Mars.
In considering the influence of planets upon you from their alchemical standpoint you’re focused on observing the effects of events attributed to them upon your character. That’s because to appraise anything justly, you must get beneath the surface of appearances.
Environment and circumstances are only effective as you respond to them; so, the good or evil resides not in the events you attract or your external conditions, but in the effect they have upon you.
The difference is not in the event, which in this case is a political appointment, but in the attitude toward it. And this holds true in all events of life.
As an alchemist you’re mostly concerned with building the kind of character that will attract the type of events and conditions which will contribute most to your welfare and survival, and which assist you to be of greatest possible service in furthering human progress.
Your objective is self-conscious immortality and oneness with God and the doctrine of spiritual alchemy is a reunion involving the self and the Divine.
You’re working with birth chart planets
Thoughts are built through experience, and through the law of affinity they group together according to their special qualities into dynamic thought-structures, or thought families. And each family, because of the elements of which they are composed, corresponds to one of the ten planets.
Your birth chart accurately maps your thought-cell structure. It reveals the natural qualities and abilities with which you were born and the kind of events you will attract unless you make some effort to change your character.
Character determines destiny and any changes made in your character will cause corresponding changes in your destiny.
