One of the easiest ways to prove the worth of Hermetic astrology is to make an effort toward mental analysis and control. Truly, whatever you do, whether planning a holiday or your breakfast, you first create it in thought.
Hermetic astrology teaches that thought vibrates at a rate beyond what material science measures. Whether measured or not a little candid investigation will prove that thought is the most potent of all vibrations.
Your thought processes are not carried out in your physical brain. Your unconscious mind aka astral brain is your domain of thought. It directs and manages ‘unconscious’ body functions and processes that you know nothing about.
Thoughts, however, are not only confined to the brain of your astral body.
Your astral body is made up of thought centers aka thought-cell groups which are mapped by the planet’s positions in your birth chart.
When you become familiar with your chart, you’ll have an accurate picture of your unconscious mind or astral makeup and a fair idea of how you’re likely to react to your environment under various circumstances.
There are many types of thoughts in your astral body. They naturally fall into positive or negative groups, flying together into centers of energy, each composed of many individual thought trends, according to their polarity.
These thought centers, brought into being by experiences in lower forms of life, exist at your human birth and every thought and emotion you’ve experienced since then has seen them acquire harmonious or discordant energy.
Desires, whether expressed in action or buried in your unconscious mind, alter some thought center in your astral body. The center will vibrate more strongly for the time it resonates under the influx of desire and if it receives enough energy it will spill over in action.
You’re very inclined to engage in uncontrolled mental states such as those found in fantasy thinking, or those driven to action without reason or will power. You need to realize that uncontrolled thinking is wasted energy and you have the power to control your mentality by ceasing to follow the lines of least resistance.
Let’s suppose an embarrassing event makes you feel very uncomfortable. Immediately all previous thoughts, in sympathy or resonance with the energy aroused, fly to aid the stimulated thought center. Similar thought patterns associated with a similar experience long ago come into your objective mind.
The present event did much more than arouse unpleasant emotion. It brought into play a lot of associated thoughts, which are passing and repassing through your mind. In a very short time you’re daydreaming, almost oblivious of your surroundings, living again in the emotions of the past, which are linked, with the discomfort of the present.
Your mentality for the time being is on one track, and until you volitionally throw the switch to another trend of thought a lot of energy is uselessly wasted.
The sensible thing to do is to realize that the embarrassment could not be helped and that the situation probably couldn’t be altered. Wisdom dictates that you resolutely turn your attention elsewhere.
Hermetic astrology teaches that ten distinctive thought trends are found in all human beings and your thought-centers and trends are unique to you.
Your ten dynamic urges
You have an urge for power, personal achievement, glory and aggrandizement that comprises your power urges that correspond to the Sun.
An urge for domesticity and love of home and offspring that comprises your domestic urges that correspond to the Moon.
An urge for learning, academic work, analysis and problem solving that comprises your intellectual urges that correspond to Mercury.
An urge for companionship, society, love, art and beauty that corresponds to your social urges ruled by Venus.
An urge that leads to combat, forceful action, destruction or construction that corresponds to your aggressive urges ruled by Mars.
An urge for abundance, goodwill, faith-based devotion and worship that corresponds to your religious urges that correspond to Jupiter.
An urge for personal safety, self-interest, self-comfort and caution that comprises your safety urges ruled by Saturn.
An urge for individuality, difference, originality and inventiveness that comprises your individualistic urges that correspond to Uranus.
An urge for idealistic betterment and the brotherhood of man which usually expresses as daydreams that comprises your utopian urges ruled by Neptune.
And an urge for cooperation and working for the greater good in group activity that corresponds to your universal welfare urges ruled by Pluto.
Every thought you have can be classified under one of these thought groups and as you gain facility in mental analysis this classification process becomes easy.
The practice of mental alchemy involves harmonizing discordant urges in order to modify or change destructive, misguided thoughts so that they express in a constructive, beneficial way.
With your birth chart you can analyze the strength and weakness of each urge scientifically, correcting what is necessary, but first you need to know this.
A few words about emotional maturity
Anger, fear, hatred and timidity never manifest in a person who is a completely mature adult. Balk a child from expressing its desire and they will become angry or tearful. The desire could not be realized so the child expresses the aroused emotion in a secondary way. The emotion demanded satisfaction and found it by substitution.
When a strong desire is blocked something very interesting occurs in the unconscious mind. The desire, besides stimulating the urge to which it belongs, excites all suppressed desires that are connected with other urges, and their combined energy motivates action. Such action, unless intelligently diverted, is usually rage, tears or self-pity and they’re very destructive emotions.
Just as a child does the immature adult acts out the aroused emotions through a secondary channel. It can be asserted that destructive emotions never manifest in a completely mature adult. However, grown up children can and do manifest them!
Do not lose heart if you habitually express yourself via the secondary method. You are simply in need of mental training that will enable you to direct your desires into channels, which are constructive and uplifting.
Tips for controlling your mentality
Have plenty of work on hand to do. It will give you a tool for letting off steam when your emotional arousal is going the familiar way of anger. Instead of the sharp words, silently turn to your work and vent your energy there. It’s an ideal antidote, not only for your temper but for all its kindred ills.
Try this: check, to the best of your ability, each thought that comes haphazardly to your mind during one day. Analyze why the thought came; why it’s discordant; what its environmental associations were; and when the reason for its appearance is apparent dismiss the thought.
On the road to learning mentality control do not hug past emotions. Do not live them over and over. Experience is necessary for soul growth, and experience will bring constructive or destructive emotion if you don’t watch it closely.
When you have gained the value from an experience, let it go.
The attitude for real living lies in taking the lessons of the past and using them to effectively cope with the present in order to attract opportunities for wider usefulness in the future.
Making each day count, to the best of your ability, takes care of your future.
As you begin to develop this new attitude it is best to do it correctly for five minutes each day rather than attempting too much. Directing your thoughts constructively for this length of time will gradually build your new habit of directed thinking and your unconscious mind will fall into line.
Reason out your hurtful memories. Gain their lesson and then dismiss them. Once an emotion is entertained, especially one that is discordant owing to its association with the past, look over it calmly. Draw the energy from it. When it is harmonized it will no longer fester in the dark but will work for you constructively.
Cherish your pleasant memories. Here’s a way to use them effectively.
When an uncalled for, unpleasant thought creeps in, in spite of your efforts to direct your attention, say firmly, ‘This is not constructive thinking’.
The word ‘constructive’ will bring up a picture of endeavor, achievement, praise and satisfaction. Then recall a pleasant memory. Relive it. Feel its happy emotions again. Let its uplifting vibrations seep through.
As your efforts persist daydreams will continue to make their appearance. You can control this situation, when it arises, by resolutely turning all your attention to the task at hand. This act will benefit the task and you will gain experience in directing your mentality.
It should be relaxed and resting or actively directed. That is your goal.
Do not expect immediate perfection. Thoughts are character, and character doesn’t change overnight. New constructive thoughts, which are gained by mental control, must be gradually built into your astral body. Old emotions must be drained of their discordant energy.
Hate, anger and fear (Mars and Saturn) must be eliminated. They’re highly destructive emotions, relics of incarnations in lower forms of life, that form the brute part of your character. They were necessary for survival back then. Now they’re the foundation of your future spiritual self. A chained brute is never safe. Only a trained and thoroughly tame one can be trusted.
Your emotions must be tamed, trained, and elevated. Whatever has happened in your past has happened for the best, and if your life hasn’t offered all that is good, you have learned valuable lessons by your errors.
Realize that as you persist and strive each day toward mental analysis and control your attitude toward life will change. And that the harmonizing of your lower-self builds a solid foundation for your spiritual body which is necessary for self-conscious immortality.
Your thoughts control what you attract into your life. So, your new spiritualized thoughts, which you brought into being by your own effort and which were built upon the foundation of your present character, will attract only good.
Truly, your thoughts are your most potent builders. Employ them wisely.
