It has pandemic potential because humans have no immunity to it. A stockpile of h5n1 vaccine is being made ready to deploy.
Wheat blast, a fungal disease, has spread more than 15,000km in a decade—from Brazil to Argentina, and then Zambia and Bangladesh. It may yet get to India, the world’s second-biggest producer of wheat.
The same fungus that causes wheat blast destroys enough rice a year to feed 60m people. Potato blight, a water mold, causes up to $10bn in losses annually. Such pathogens bring chaos to a food system already weakened by war, climate change and export bans.

The next oil crisis won’t be pretty
In 2022 Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ignited an oil crisis. Big sanctions were imposed on Moscow and Russia retaliated by cutting off Europe’s oil supply. The Nord Stream gas pipeline was closed and later destroyed. Oil prices went bananas. It briefly surged to nearly $140 a barrel. Europe was in turmoil. Natural gas prices surged worldwide. Since then, efforts have been made to stabilize the market with price caps and supply cuts.

Neptune’s corporations are often run by morally bankrupt executives and while they often start out with the public good in mind, it doesn’t last.
