Stephanie Gregory Clifford aka Stormy Daniels became a pornographic film actress, scriptwriter and director.
She claims to have had a one-night sexcapade with Donald Trump in 2006 and on October 8, 2016 told Dylan Howard, the editor-in-chief of the National Enquirer, that she was willing to go on the record about her alleged affair. Howard then informed Michael Cohen who negotiated a deal to pay Daniels $130,00 in exchange for her rights to her story and a non-disclosure agreement.
On January 12, 2018 the Wall Street Journal published an article detailing the $130,000 payment to Daniels, the first public acknowledgment of the scheme.
On April 30, 2018 Daniels sued Trump for defamation over a tweet in which he wrote that her claims that she was threatened in 2011 were a ‘total con job.’
On August 21, 2018 Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to eight federal charges of tax evasion, fraud and campaign finance violations related to the payments to Daniels (and Karen McDougal). He tells a federal court in Manhattan that Trump directed him to make the payments.
On December 11, 2018 Daniel’s defamation case against Trump is thrown out and she’s ordered to pay $293,052 to cover Trump’s legal fees; and on December 12 Michael Cohen is sentenced to three years in federal prison.
In August 2019 Cyrus Vance Jr., the Manhattan District Attorney, subpoenas the Trump Organization for records related to the Daniels/McDougal’s payments.
On November 2, 2021 Alvin Bragg is elected Manhattan’s district attorney and on April 7, 2022 he reiterates that the criminal investigation into Trump and his company remains active.
Over the next 12 months the investigation hots up and on March 30, 2023 two of Trump’s attorneys say he has been indicted by the Manhattan grand jury.
