His story
Mark Rutte became a politician, historian and teacher serving as Prime Minister of the Netherlands since 2010.
He’s the youngest child of Izaäk Rutte, a merchant, and his second wife Hermina Dilling, a secretary, and has seven siblings. He attended the Maerlant Lyceum from 1979 until 1985 specializing in the arts.
His original ambition was to attend a conservatory and become a concert pianist, but instead he went to study history at Leiden University, where he obtained an MA degree in 1992.
He then entered the business world, working as a manager for Unilever and its food subsidiary Calvé. Between 1997 and 2000, he was staff manager of Van den Bergh Nederland, a subsidiary of Unilever; and in 2002 he became human resource manager for IgloMora Groep, another subsidiary of Unilever.
Between 1993 and 1997 Rutte was a member of the national board of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and in 2003 was elected as a member of parliament.
In 2006 he was elected leader of the center-right VDD and in 2010 lead his party to an election victory becoming the first liberal to be appointed prime minister in 92 years.
On July 10, 2023 he announced his departure as political leader of the VVD and said that he would leave politics when a new government took over.
On June 26, 2024 the Transatlantic military alliance NATO announced his appointment as its next chief, entrusting him with the leadership role during a critical time for European security amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.
He took the post of NATO Secretary-General on October 1, 2024.
Rutte is single and a member of the Dutch Protestant Church. He’s been praised for his everyman style, often cycling to work and wearing casual clothes. And he’s a strong supporter of Ukraine having overseen more than $3.2 billion of aid to the embattled country since Russia’s invasion.
