Her story

Fani Taifa Willis became the district attorney of Fulton County, Georgia serving since 2020. She is the first woman to hold the office.

Her father was a criminal defense attorney.

She graduated from Regina High School, in Maryland and studied political science at Howard University, graduating cum laude in 1993. She then moved to Atlanta to attend Emory University School of Law, graduating in 1996 with a Juris Doctor.

That year she married Fred Willis and they have two daughters. They divorced in 2005.

She then worked as a prosecutor and assistant district attorney in the Fulton County district attorney’s office.

In 2018, she went into private practice and in 2019 became Chief Municipal Judge for South Fulton, Georgia.

In 2020, she was elected district attorney for Fulton County.

On February 10, 2021, Willis launched a criminal investigation into Donald Trump’s 's attempts to influence Georgia election officials, which resulted in indictments against Trump and 18 alleged co-conspirators on charges of racketeering and other crimes.

In January 2024, a defendant in the case alleged that she and Nathan Wade – the lawyer whom Willis appointed in November 2021 to lead the prosecution in the trial – had had an improper romantic relationship. They acknowledged the relationship but denied any wrongdoing.

In March 2024, Judge McAfee ruled that either Willis (along with her office) or Wade must leave the case and Wade subsequently resigned from his role as lead prosecutor. The romantic imbroglio consumed the case for weeks and delayed other proceedings.

On March 20, 2024 Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee allowed Donald Trump and eight of his co-defendants in Georgia’s criminal election subversion case to appeal her remaining as lead prosecutor on the case. More delays.
