His story
Daniel (Danya) Naroditsky became a chess grandmaster, author, and commentator.
He was born in San Mateo, California and his parents, Vladimir and Lena Schuman, were Jewish emigrants from the Soviet Union.
He attended high school at Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, California and in 2019 graduated from Standford University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He spoke fluent Russian.
In 2007 he won the Under-12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship and in 2013 the US Junior Championship.
In 2013 he was officially awarded the grandmaster title at age 18.
While consistently in the top 200 of FIDE’s world rankings for classical chess, Naroditsky was more proficient in faster (Mars) time formats such as blitz chess, where he was consistently ranked top 25 in the world.
He published ‘Mastering Positional Chess’ (2010) and ‘Mastering Complex Endgames’ (2012) and from 2014 to 2020 wrote ‘The Practical Endgame,’ column in Chess Life Magazine. He also made educational chess content on YouTube and Twitch.
In 2024, he was accused without evidence by former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik of cheating in online chess. He rejected the allegations but indicated that he felt other top players had similar suspicions about him.
He said the allegations had taken a deep toll on him on and in his last livestream, he expressed feelings of people assuming ‘the worst of intentions’ if he starts doing well off-stream.
From 2020 to 2025, he was the Grandmaster-in-Residence of the Charlotte Chess Center.
Daniel Naroditsky died at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 19, 2025 aged 29. His death is being investigated as a potential suicide or drug overdose.
